There is no single best AI image generator in 2026. As of October 2026, two OpenAI GPT Image 2.5 models hold the top places on a blind-vote leaderboard, while Google's Nano Banana 2.1 ranks fourth at a much lower listed price per image. The right pick depends on the job: text in images, cost, editing, or licensing terms.

How we compared them

This comparison uses pages read on 17 October 2026: the Artificial Analysis leaderboard, vendor API docs and pricing pages, and Adobe's Firefly plans. We did not generate test images ourselves, so this article reports what vendors and the leaderboard publish.

A leaderboard ranks blind human votes, and its page warns that several Elo scores carry roughly 10 to 15 points of uncertainty, so neighbouring ranks can be effectively tied. Midjourney and Adobe Firefly are not on it at all.

Best AI image generators in 2026 at a glance

GPT Image

OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.5 and two API models in September 2026: gpt-image-2.5-sunburst and gpt-image-2.5-flare. Both add xhigh and max quality levels on top of low, medium, high and auto. OpenAI's image generation guide describes Sunburst as the choice where "editing precision matters most" and Flare as the choice for "fast, high-quality everyday image generation".

The two 2.5 models share GPT Image 2's token rates, but OpenAI notes that equal token rates do not mean equal cost per image. Its per-image table covers GPT Image 2, 1.5, 1 and 1 Mini, not the 2.5 models, so check pricing for the model you actually call.

OpenAI lists its own limits: complex prompts may take up to two minutes, text placement and clarity can still struggle, and recurring characters or brand elements may vary between images.

If your code still calls gpt-image-1, check the date. OpenAI's deprecations page lists it for shutdown on 23 October 2026, with the 2.5 models as the replacement. The same page lists DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 for removal on 12 May 2026.

Nano Banana

Nano Banana is Google's nickname for its Gemini image models. The current API lineup, as of October 2026, is Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1), Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro. Google's model card dates 2.1 to 6 October 2026. The Gemini API image docs call 2.1 the "primary high-efficiency workhorse" and recommend it for all new projects.

Google's own benchmark gives Nano Banana 2.1 (Thinking) an overall text-to-image preference score of 1050, against 935 for Nano Banana Pro. That is Google's own test. The independent blind-vote leaderboard also ranks 2.1 above Pro, at 1174 against 1115. Individual prompts vary, so test your own.

The Gemini app's free plan includes image creation and editing. Google's plans page gives no numeric image quota; it says usage is compute-based, with limits that reset every five hours up to a weekly cap. For a deeper look at the family, see our Gemini image generation guide.

Midjourney

Midjourney's default model changed twice in 2026. According to Midjourney's update notes, V8.1 became the default on 11 June 2026, replacing V7. Its HD mode produces images at twice the size and four times the resolution of V7, taking about 12 seconds per image against about 4 seconds in standard mode. A secondary report of Midjourney's own post says V8.2 became the default on 24 July 2026, with a focus on aesthetics, personalisation and image quality.

Midjourney is not on the Artificial Analysis leaderboard. Its pricing and terms pages could not be checked for this article, so we have not listed plan prices or commercial-use rules.

FLUX (Black Forest Labs)

FLUX 3 Image ranks 12th on the leaderboard, at $48.00 per 1,000 images. Black Forest Labs' pricing page lists pay-as-you-go API access with resolutions from 768x768 to 4K. The company's blog index also lists FLUX 3 Image Klein, posted on 15 October 2026 and described as a 5.6B parameter open-weights model.

BFL sells self-hosted open-weights licences in tiers, named Builder, Platform, Professional, Enterprise and Synthetic Data. Read its Licensing page before any commercial self-hosted use.

Adobe Firefly

Adobe's plans page lists Standard at US$9.99 per month with 2,000 generative credits, Pro at $19.99 with 4,000, Pro Plus at $49.99 with 10,000, and Premium at $199.99 with 50,000. A free plan has daily limits. Credits cover premium features and partner models, and standard image features stay unlimited on paid plans after credits run out.

Firefly also offers partner models, including GPT Image, Gemini (Nano Banana) and FLUX. Adobe says Firefly outputs are "safe for commercial use", based on licensed and public-domain training content. That claim concerns training data. It does not say whether you can copyright an output.

Blind-vote leaderboard snapshot

The table below lists selected rows from the Artificial Analysis text-to-image leaderboard, fetched on 17 October 2026. Ranks are by Elo from blind human votes. Prices are the leaderboard's per-1,000-image figures at 1024x1024 default settings.

| Rank | Model | Vendor | Elo | Price per 1,000 images | |---|---|---|---|---| | 1 | GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (max) | OpenAI | 1220 | $210.70 | | 2 | GPT Image 2.5 Flare (max) | OpenAI | 1207 | $210.70 | | 3 | GPT Image 2 (high) | OpenAI | 1186 | $211.00 | | 4 | Nano Banana 2.1 | Google | 1174 | $33.60 | | 6 | MAI-Image-2.6 | Microsoft AI | 1166 | $38.90 | | 7 | Nano Banana 2 | Google | 1140 | $67.00 | | 9 | GPT Image 1.5 (high) | OpenAI | 1123 | $133.00 | | 12 | FLUX 3 Image | Black Forest Labs | 1116 | $48.00 | | 13 | Nano Banana Pro | Google | 1115 | $134.00 |

Read the ranks with care. GPT Image 2.5 ranks first, but its margin over second place is small enough to sit inside the error bars, so it is not a clear win. Ideogram's best entry, Ideogram 4.0 (Quality), ranks 29th at Elo 1026.

API cost per image compared

Per-image API prices differ by model, quality and resolution. The table uses standard (non-batch) prices.

| Model | Vendor | Setting | Price per image | |---|---|---|---| | GPT Image 2 | OpenAI | 1024x1024, low quality | $0.006 | | GPT Image 2 | OpenAI | 1024x1024, medium quality | $0.053 | | GPT Image 2 | OpenAI | 1024x1024, high quality | $0.211 | | GPT Image 1 Mini | OpenAI | 1024x1024, medium quality | $0.011 | | Nano Banana 2.1 | Google | 1K | $0.0336 | | Nano Banana 2.1 | Google | 4K | $0.113 | | Nano Banana Pro | Google | 1K or 2K | $0.134 | | Nano Banana Pro | Google | 4K | $0.24 |

OpenAI bills input tokens separately, so its figures are not the full cost of a request. Google's batch price for Nano Banana 2.1 at 1K is half the standard rate, at $0.0168. Black Forest Labs' calculator showed $0.048 per image for its default selection, but it did not say which model or size that was, so we left it out. Check the pricing pages before you budget.

Can you use AI images commercially?

Usually, but check two things separately. First, the tool's plan and terms must allow commercial use. Second, copyright: under current US Copyright Office guidance, purely AI-generated material is not protected, and a prompt alone may not give you enough control. Our AI image copyright guide covers the rules by country. This is general information, not legal advice.

How to choose

  • Text in the image: test your exact wording on two or three models. OpenAI and Google both list small or dense text as a weak spot.
  • Editing an existing image: start with GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst, which OpenAI positions for editing precision, and try Nano Banana 2.1 with reference images. The Gemini API accepts up to 14 reference images per request.
  • Lowest price per image: GPT Image 2 at low quality is the cheapest row in the table above, at $0.006, but low is the lowest quality tier. GPT Image 1 Mini at medium quality costs $0.011. For Google, the 1K price is $0.0336 for Nano Banana 2.1 and for Nano Banana 2 Lite.
  • Commercial projects: read the plan terms, and do not assume a tool's commercial-use permission makes the output yours to protect.

Try image generation at OndaLabs

OndaLabs is an AI voice studio, and its image studio sits alongside text to speech and music generation. Image generation is included from the Starter plan, at $9 per month for 170,000 credits, and commercial use is included on Starter and above. You can generate new images or edit with reference images, and the credit cost is shown before you generate.

The studio offers five models under its own labels: Nano Banana Lite, Nano Banana, Nano Banana Pro, GPT Image and GPT Image Mini. Those labels are not Google or OpenAI API version names, so the leaderboard figures above do not describe them. Starter's 170,000 monthly credits cover about 85 Nano Banana images at 1K. You can compare plans on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI image generator in 2026?

There is no single answer. As of October 2026, the top two places on the Artificial Analysis blind-vote leaderboard go to OpenAI's GPT Image 2.5 models, but the margin is small. Choose by job: text accuracy, editing, price per image, or the licence you need.

Which AI image generator is best at text?

Test it yourself with your exact wording. OpenAI lists text placement as a limit, and Google's model card says small text and long paragraphs can render weakly. Keep text short and check it at the size it will be shown.

Is there a free AI image generator?

The Gemini app's free plan includes image creation and editing, with no numeric quota on Google's plans page. Firefly's free plan has daily limits. OndaLabs does not include image generation on its Free plan; it starts at Starter.

Can I use AI-generated images commercially?

Often yes, but the tool's terms and plan decide the permission, and copyright is a separate question. In the US, purely AI-generated material is not protected under current Copyright Office guidance. This is general information, not legal advice.

What is Nano Banana, and how does it compare with GPT Image?

Nano Banana is Google's nickname for its Gemini image models, and GPT Image is OpenAI's model family. On the independent leaderboard as of October 2026, GPT Image 2.5 ranks first and second, and Nano Banana 2.1 ranks fourth at a lower listed price per image. Compare them on your own prompts before you commit.
