A faceless YouTube channel publishes videos without showing the creator on camera. Narration, screen recordings, animation and original b-roll carry the video instead. YouTube's Partner Program does not require an on-camera face. It does require original, valuable videos and enough qualified watch time or Shorts views. This guide covers the plan, the thresholds and the rules.

A faceless format suits an AI voice, because the voice carries the whole channel. It also puts more weight on the script, the visuals and the originality of each video. Those are the parts that decide whether a channel can earn.

What is a faceless YouTube channel?

Faceless does not mean anonymous or automated. It means the video does not depend on the creator's face. Common formats include narrated explainers over original footage, screen-capture tutorials, animated explainers and interview-style videos where the host is a voice.

YouTube's policy pages do not mention faceless formats. They judge the video itself, meaning its substance and originality, not whether a face appears. A faceless channel is held to the same rules as any other channel.

Can a faceless YouTube channel be monetized?

Yes, if it meets the Partner Program requirements and the monetization policies. As of October 2026, the join list is short and has no on-camera requirement:

  • Follow YouTube's channel monetization policies.
  • Live in a country where the YouTube Partner Program is available.
  • Have no active Community Guidelines strikes.
  • Turn on 2-Step Verification.
  • Have access to advanced features.
  • Have one active AdSense for YouTube account.

These items come from the Partner Program help page. The subscriber and viewing thresholds are covered below.

How to start a faceless YouTube channel with an AI voice

The build steps are the same for most channels. The table shows what to do at each step and what to avoid.

| Step | What to do | What to avoid | |---|---|---| | 1. Pick a topic | Choose a subject where you add something specific, such as your research or your experience | Topics where every video is the same template with a new title | | 2. Plan the series | Give each video a distinct storyline, focus or concept | Repeating one format with minimal variation | | 3. Write the script | Write in your own words, with sentences of 20 words or less | Reading articles or news feeds aloud | | 4. Pick a voice | Choose one prebuilt voice and keep it for the channel | Imitating a real person's voice without permission | | 5. Build visuals | Make original visuals and unique backgrounds for each video | Slideshows with scrolling text and no narrative | | 6. Add audio | Use royalty-free or licensed music, and credit Creative Commons tracks | Unlicensed music | | 7. Publish and disclose | Select "AI use" in YouTube Studio when realistic AI content is involved | Leaving realistic AI content undisclosed |

Script, voice and visuals

Start with the script. Write it yourself, with a point of view and a clear structure. Use short sentences, read them aloud, and cut anything you would not say to a viewer. Then choose one voice and keep it. OndaLabs offers 30 prebuilt voices, usable in every supported language, so the channel keeps one recognisable voice from video to video. For two-speaker formats, such as a host and a guest, the dialogue tool covers the conversation.

Visuals and music need the same care. Image generation is available on Starter and above, and music generation on Creator and up, at 2,500 credits per clip or 5,000 per song. Check the licence terms on the pricing page before you publish anything you have generated. YouTube's Audio Library is another option for royalty-free music, and it is described as copyright-safe. Creative Commons tracks need an artist credit in the description.

What the Partner Program requires

Two sets of thresholds matter. The current rules apply now, and new-creator thresholds change on 1 February 2027. Creators already in the program are not affected by the new entry thresholds.

| Requirement | Now (as of October 2026) | From 1 February 2027, new creators | |---|---|---| | Subscribers | 1,000 | 1,000 | | Watch hours | 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months | 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days | | Shorts views (alternative) | 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days | 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days | | Fan funding tier (selected countries) | 500 subscribers, 3 valid public uploads in 90 days, and 3,000 watch hours in 12 months or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | Unchanged |

Watch hours and Shorts views are alternatives, so you need one route, not both. Shorts-feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. Applications are typically reviewed in about one month. If an application is rejected, you can appeal within 21 days or re-apply after 30 days. After a rejection that is not the first, the wait is 90 days.

From 1 February 2027, a channel also needs to count as active. It is active with 1,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days, or 1 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days, or two long-form videos or five Shorts uploaded every 90 days. Channels that fall below these levels get a 90-day window to restore active status. Before that date, YouTube says it may turn off monetization on channels with no upload or Posts tab post for six months or more. The new thresholds page has the full wording.

Shorts or long-form?

Shorts can be up to three minutes if they are square or vertical and were uploaded on or after October 15, 2024. Creators keep 45% of their allocated Shorts Creator Pool revenue, according to YouTube's Shorts revenue page. From 1 February 2027, earning a share of Shorts Creator Pool and YouTube Premium revenue for a month needs 10 million qualified Shorts views over the last 90 days. Missing that level does not remove a channel from the Partner Program or affect its long-form earnings.

Many faceless creators cut one voiceover into several formats. That works only when each version adds something. Non-original Shorts, such as unedited clips, reuploads and compilations with no original content added, are ineligible views.

Rules to stay inside

  • Inauthentic content. YouTube renamed "repetitious content" to "inauthentic content" on July 15, 2025. Channels where content feels interchangeable from video to video are not allowed to monetize, and each video's substance should be materially varied.
  • Reused content. Videos that exclusively read other people's material aloud, such as text from websites or news feeds, are not allowed to monetize, even with permission.
  • AI personas. Channels with AI-generated personas that present as human experts giving health, legal, financial or political advice cannot monetize. An AI "doctor" or an AI podcast host giving financial guidance are the examples given in the monetization policies.
  • Mass production. Using automated tools or AI to churn out high volumes of similar content with minimal changes falls under YouTube's spam policy.
  • Likeness. Never clone or imitate a real person's voice without permission. People can ask YouTube to remove AI content that looks or sounds like them. YouTube announced on 23 September 2026 that it will start integrating speaking voice detection with facial detection, but the post gives no start date.

How OndaLabs fits

OndaLabs covers the voice and audio side of the channel. The Free plan includes 2,000 credits a month, about 2 minutes, which is enough to test a script and a voice before you commit. Starter, at $9 a month, gives 170,000 credits, about 189 minutes, Onda Flash, image generation and commercial use. Creator, at $22 a month, adds 3 custom voices and music generation. Full plan details are on the pricing page, and you can try the text to speech tool on the Free plan.

Your ideas and your writing are the part that makes the channel original. Use the voice to deliver them. For the next steps, read AI voiceover for YouTube and YouTube monetization with an AI voice.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a faceless YouTube channel?

Pick a topic where you can add something specific, plan a series with a distinct concept for each video, and write an original script. Choose one consistent voice, prepare visuals you have the rights to use, and publish on a schedule. Check the Partner Program requirements early so you know which thresholds to track.

Can a faceless YouTube channel make money?

It can, if it meets the Partner Program requirements and the monetization policies. YouTube's pages set thresholds for subscribers, watch hours and Shorts views, but they do not publish earnings figures. Treat any claim about a specific monthly income with caution.

Do faceless channels need to show their face to monetize?

No. The Partner Program join list does not include an on-camera or show-your-face requirement. Monetization depends on the channel following the policies, meeting the thresholds and publishing original, valuable videos.

Is using an AI voice on a faceless channel allowed?

Yes, as long as the videos meet YouTube's policies. Disclose realistic AI content when it applies, and do not imitate a real person's voice without permission. Avoid AI personas that present as human experts on health, legal, financial or political topics.

What do I need to join the YouTube Partner Program?

You need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days. You also need to meet the join list, which includes 2-Step Verification and one active AdSense account. Applications are typically reviewed in about one month.

How many videos before a faceless channel gets monetized?

YouTube does not publish a number of videos. Eligibility depends on the subscriber, watch hour and Shorts view thresholds, plus the policies on originality. Focus on publishing varied, valuable videos on a steady schedule, and track your progress in YouTube Studio.
